Do text messages have any validity as a contract /real estate transaction ?

My son entered into a contract to buy his fathers house. Being that it was his father they did not draw up a contract. Now his father has passed and his step mother is asking him to give the house back. All he has is the text messages they exchanged. Thank you. You can reach me by email or text msg.
