How long does it take to probate a will?

Dad died in 2000 and left 2 wills, one to be open at the time of his death and the other to be opened when his wife died. She died in Aug 2011. The attorney has been called and notified of this death and since then we have not been able to talk directly to him only his assistance who keeps telling us he will get back to us when he has news. Just how long does it take to probate a will of someone who has been dead over 10 years!
