QUESTION

Where do I take my husband's will?

Asked on May 23rd, 2021 on Wills and Probate - Washington
More details to this question:
My husband used an online form to write his will and had two witnesses sign it. He passed away a few months ago of cancer at the age of 64. We were married for 41 years. He left everything to me, but we were already joint owners of the house, bank accounts, and cars. And I am the sole beneficiary named on his life insurance and retirement. He owned no other property and the only debt is what's left to pay on the mortgage for our house. His medical bills have all been paid. I've already received the life insurance pay out and I have an upcoming meeting with Social Security about survivor's benefits. Where do I "turn in" his will?

Wills are filed with the local probate court.  In Washington State this may be the local district court.  If nothing passes under the Will, it need not be probated.  But you might do well to check with a local probate lawyer:  "joint owners" does not mean "joint tenancy" or "joint with right of survivorship."

This is general information. It cannot substitute for a personal consultation with an attorney. It is not intended to be legal advice or imply an attorney-client relationship.
