Hello, My grandmother died some time ago leaving a home in Washington DC to her three children. My uncle died in December of 2020. He leaves behind two living children and a possible wife. My aunt died in February 2021, who never married nor did she have any children. She is survived by my father, she has one nephew and three nieces, (one being myself and the other two are my cousins). Prior to everyone passing away, my father and my aunt and uncle wanted to sell the home. In trying to make a long story short. I know my cousins and the possible wife will receive my uncle's share of the estate. The question/concerns come from Aunt's share of the estate. I have been told that the bulk of it would go to my father, due to him being her last living heir, and a small part would go to my cousins. Then I was told that it would all go to my father, however, I was to that none of the prior statements are true. My aunt's estate would be divided up equally amongst everyone?
Heirship varies slightly state-to-state, which may be why you are getting different answers. Please talk with a probate attorney who practices in the district. You will need to be represented by an attorney to settle her estate.
