Is it legal for workers comp to lie and act like a temp agency and call family members asking questions about me?

I was injured on the job had back surgery a year ago. My Lawyer is trying to get me approved for a spinal stimulator but they do not want to approve it. I have had three family members that have gotten phone calls from a blocked number asking questions about me saying i used them as a job reference. I have been unable to work for over a year so the whole job thing is BS. They are asking questions about how mobile i am and what my hobbies are. I have never heard any job ask how mobile they are as a job reference call. Please let me know if this is illegal on there behalf it doesn't seem legal at all. My lawyer is looking into it but i am very curious if this is legal.
