Are there legal ramifications for choosing not to renew a contract for registration of a domain and webhosting for a formal employer or customer?

I volunteered to register, build and maintain a domain and website for a friends business with my own money and resources. The registration contract is up and so is my relationship with the business. The now current owner is threatening legal action because the site is coming down if it is not renewed. It could be transferred however I am no longer in communication with the owner and want nothing to do with the operation.
