QUESTION

Is just texting a minor illegal?

Asked on Jul 06th, 2021 on Sexual Abuse - California
More details to this question:
So I met this girl on this dating site, her profile said she was 23, I'm 26. After I texted her about 3 weeks she told me she lied and that she is 17 and would be turning 18 in 3 days. I kept texting her and I asked did she want to hang out after her b day(only as friends) there was no sexual texting or sexual pictures sent AT ALL. Just small talk like friends. Well then the other day her dad calls me and says he could press charges just for texting a minor. I never hung out with this girl by the way. Just friendly text messages. Could he really press charges for me just texting a minor even when she initially lied to me about her age?

This is a very common scam going around the Internet. There is no girl there are no parents and you are a victim not them. This scam involves usually a demand for money for mental counseling bills For the "daughter", Followed by a promise not to go to the authorities if you pay. If I were you I would block their number, and completely ignore them.
