The short answer is of course you do. There is nothing more important than your child and you want to make sure you aren't facing an uphill battle in court. Hard to expect the attorneys on this site to say anything else. If nothing else, you should at least consult with an attorney to get the basics, and then perhaps you and the mother of your child can work something out based on the guidance you've received. Custody is going to be an issue until this child turns 18, so you are going to have to learn to work with each other a little bit.
