Independent contractor status generally protects the business, not the worker. If a business-worker relationship qualifies as independent contractor, it allows the business to avoid various wage and hour laws. Recent enforcement efforts have meant that many companies are working to ensure that their independent contractors continue to qualify, so the company does not have to provide various benefits, including a minimum wage.
