If the lease is up, then you are on a month-to-month tenancy, which means that you only have to give the landlord 20 days notice of your intent to leave. That's 20 days notice prior to the end of the month.

No it is not illegal. I would report the incident to your employer. That creates a hostile work environment. I would also make a police report relative to the threat.
