I don't fully understand your question.  If there was a look up performed by a private investigation firm, I'm sure they gave you the information that appears of record.  Is it possible that the criminal record that was discovered is not against you but against someone with the same name as you?  If the criminal record shows up against you, arising from a jurisdiction where you have never appeared, then a simple letter should be sufficient to straighten out the issue.  On the other hand, if you have ever been arrested, there will be a record of that and it will show up in a criminal background check.  I hope this is helpful....
