You may be receiving Supplemental Security Income, meaning that you did not pay into Social Security long enough and close enough to the time of your disability, or you may be receiving very little Social Security Disability Insurance, possibly topped off by Supplemental Security Income, based on the amount you paid into Social Security.  Social Security Disability Insurance is equivalent to the amount you would receive in retirement benefits based on your work record.... Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is advance access to Social Security retirement benefits for disabled people of working age who have paid into Social Security.  It converts to Social Security retirement benefits when someone reaches full retirement age.  You are probably thinking of something else -- like Medicare and/or Medicaid home health care and, if your mother's Social Security retirement benefit is less than $771/month, Supplemental Security Income.  Discuss this with a local elder law attorney.  You can find one using the Find a Lawyer function on the website of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (www.naela.org)... If you do not have enough work credits to qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance (and the number required is lower if you became disabled before age 31), you may still qualify for Supplemental Security Income ($771/month in 2018).  You can apply online at www.ssa.gov.

What constitutes a disability?

Answered 7 years and a month ago by attorney Terry Lynn Garrett   |   1 Answer   |  Legal Topics: Social Security Disability
While there is a list of disabilities on www.ssa.gov, the important question is whether the condition is so disabling that it makes the person unable to engage in "substantial gainful activity", earning at least $1,220/month (2019), for at least 12 months or to result in death.

How do I apply for Social security disability

Answered 7 years and a month ago by attorney Terry Lynn Garrett   |   1 Answer   |  Legal Topics: Social Security Disability
If you have paid into the Social Security system, you may qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) in an amount equivalent to your Social Security retirement benefits and, once you have received it for 24 months, Medicare.   If you have not, or if your SSDI does not equal the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) amount ($771 in 2019) and you are not able to engage in "substantial gainful employment" (earning at least $1,229/month in 2019), you may also qualify for that.  In Texas, one dollar of SSI qualifies your for Medicaid.   It is not clear which you applied for or what you mean by "regular" and "disability" benefits.   In general, the key to obtaining Social Security benefits is to thoroughly document your condition, respond promptly, and repeatedly appeal. ...
