 Was the work completed as required by the contract? If  The work was completed according to the contract, then the contractor should be paid for the work done. The fact that the  contractor signed the contract as Bill a contractor, but completed the work as Joe the contractor does not change the fact that the work was done according to the contract.  If your position is that the work was not done according to the contract, that you have a much stronger argument. The car dealer cannot sell you a car and cannot transfer title to you if there is a lien on the car. Did you receive a title to the car? If you received the title, then there should not be a lown on the car. When did you discover there was a lien on the car? How were you able to register the vehicle with a lien?  If you were not told about the lien and if you were given title with no indication of a lien and if you were able to register the car without the lien, then you will win the case. this is Contract Law and the proper answer can be given after reviewing the Contract and comparing the actions of the contractor with the terms of the Contract. My initial reaction is that this is a close call in that work has been done and payments have been made. The issue is whether sufficient work has been done given the monies paid.
