 By virtue of you even calling it "common areas" I think you know you have little to no expecatation of privacy which is neccesssaary if you want to have a case. However, Connecticut is a one party recording state so if you were to have an expectation, then the landlord would have to be part of the conversation.  That being said, without more information, a determination is impossible.... You passed the standard three day right of recession.  You are likely on a payment plan.  The only way to cancel the contract now would be to file a chapter 7 bankruptcy. More importantly,  have you calculated your average 6 month income prior to the month in which you file to calculate the appropriate numbers for your Means Test?  Do you know how to fill out your SOFA (Statement of Financial Affairs)?  Do you understand the difference for the I- J calculations versus the Means Test?  Do you have any assets to protect, because you better hit the books and learn both the Connecticut and Federal asset exemption statutes.  Are you aware of the local rules for your jurisdiction?  You are going to cause yourself so much trouble because you know nothing at all about what you are trying to do.  Please believe me when I tell you that it is not worth it.  You can not do this successfully on your own without an experienced bankruptcy attorney.  Good luck. ... You can sue the dealership for negligence, but I don't think it is a slam dunk.  I think different people could have different opinions s to whether the dealership acted reasonably, given that the building was locked and (presumably) this had proved to be adequate security in the past.  Also, I'm assuming that you had insurance that covered most if not all of your loss, thus most, if not all, of any damages you recovered from the dealership would go to repay the insurance company.  Indeed, the insurance company may decide to file a direct claim against the dealership, independent of you.  If you didn't have insurance, it's a different story, and the upside of suing probaly outweighs the downside....
